Air and Sea Cadets from across Somerset joined members of the Royal Air Force Association and the Royal British Legion along with other local veterans, community leaders and members of the public to mark the 73rd Anniversary of the Battle of Britain in Glastonbury on Sunday.
Amongst the local veterans was Glastonbury’s prospective MP, James Heappey, who said “The Battle of Britain was a key turning point in the Second World War as the Nazi advance westwards was finally halted. As Winston Churchill said at the time ‘Never have so many owed so much to so few’ and it is important that we pause to remember the incredible bravery and sacrifice of those ‘few’ so that we could remain the great and free country that we are today.”
James added “It was great to see so many of our local air and sea cadets on parade today too. Our cadet organisations play such an important part in developing young people not only with a view to careers in the military but, much more importantly, to instil in them a sense of pride in themselves, their community and their country.”
